Epidemiological profile of facial assaults at the Brazzaville University Hospital Centre: 115 cases

Objective
To describe the epidemiological profile of facial assaults at Brazzaville University Hospital.
Methodology
A retrospective descriptive study conducted in the Accident and Emergency, Stomatology and Maxillofacial Surgery departments of the Brazzaville University Hospital, from 1 January 2020 to 31 December 2024, focusing on assaults resulting in facial injuries.
Results
115 patients were included. The mean age was 23 ± 4 years, with a predominance of males (71.3%). 74.8% were from disadvantaged backgrounds. The assailant belonged to ‘Bébés Noirs’ gangs in 60% of cases. Theft in public places was the main motive (47%). Punching (46.1%) and stabbings (39.1%) were the main mechanisms. Simple lacerations were the most common type of injury (74.7%).
Conclusion: Facial assaults mainly affect young men from disadvantaged backgrounds who are victims of urban gangs.
